پیت هگست، وزیر جنگ ایالات متحده در یک نشست خبری در پاسخ به پرسشی درباره سخنان ترامپ که گفته بود مایل است در تعیین رهبر بعدی ایران نقش داشته باشد، گفت اهداف نظامی آمریکا گسترش پیدا نکرده است، اما با توجه به عملیات در حال انجام، رئیس‌جمهور آمریکا «در عمل تأثیر زیادی بر این‌که چه کسی ایران را اداره خواهد کرد» دارد.

وزیر جنگ آمریکا تأکید کرد واشینگتن دقیقاً می‌داند چه اهدافی را دنبال می‌کند و عملیات نظامی با هدف مشخصی پیش می‌رود. او افزود یکی از اهداف اصلی آمریکا این است که جمهوری اسلامی هرگز به سلاح هسته‌ای دست پیدا نکند، هرچند جزئیات برنامه‌های عملیاتی در این زمینه اعلام نخواهد شد.

او در بخش دیگری از سخنانش به اعتراض‌های پیشین در ایران اشاره کرد و گفت مردم ایران در آن اعتراض‌ها «شجاعت زیادی» نشان داده‌اند و واکنش حکومت نیز ماهیت این نظام را برای جهان آشکار کرده است. به گفته او، با تضعیف توانایی‌ها و ساختارهای حکومت، فرصت بیشتری برای مردم ایران ایجاد می‌شود تا در آینده برای تغییر وضعیت اقدام کنند.

وزیر جنگ آمریکا همچنین گفت ایالات متحده و متحدانش، از جمله اسرائیل، در حال هدف قرار دادن افرادی هستند که در سرکوب معترضان نقش دارند.
