🚨🇺🇸 NEWSOM'S OFFICE RESPONDS TO ICE CRITICISM WITH DATA ON PRISON TRANSFERS
After Border Commander Bovino claimed Newsom dodged invitations to visit the Imperial Valley, his office fired back with numbers.
The data from California's Department of Corrections shows the state has transferred 10,588 inmates to ICE custody since Newsom took office.
Annual ICE detainer placements ranged from about 1,400 to 2,400 per year between 2016 and 2024.
Newsom's office draws a clear line: California cooperates on removing convicted criminals from state prisons, but does not assist with community enforcement operations targeting immigrants outside the prison system.
Reality: Both sides have a point.
The data confirms California does work with ICE on criminal deportations.
But critics aren't wrong that the state limits cooperation beyond that, which is the core of the sanctuary policy debate.
Different definitions of "cooperation."
