Ming is out with another explanation of a Tesla AI patent. IMHO, the innovations outlined here are on par with the Attention Is All You Need paper when it comes to running sophisticated AI algorithms quickly and efficiently.

Tesla had to be doing something incredibly efficient to be able to simultaneously process 6 video streams to drive a car on the underpowered HW3 chip that came out in 2019. The innovations described here were first described in a provisional patent filed in 2018.

Neural net AI algorithms were conceived by very brainy researchers which used mathematical proofs to show how multiple layers of floating point numbers could be combined to learn things. And by floating point, I mean numbers from -1 to 1, like 0.45534.

GPUs that were used to draw video game screens were also really good at computing floating point math. So by a quirk of history, when AI researchers in 2012 looked around to see what they could use to compute these floating point operations, they found these GPUs.

But when Tesla took on the challenge of a self driving car, they realized high powered GPUs (which even in 2018 were being assembled into giant supercomputers with thousands of chips to compute AI workloads) weren't going to fit inside a car's energy and power budget.

Computing floating point math is way slower than working with small 8 bit integers, which can represent integers (no decimals) from -127 to 127, which is only 255 unique numbers, a far cry the millions of unique numbers that "normal" AI algorithms use.

Through a lot of trial and error, Tesla came up with modifications to the "normal" vision processing AI algorithms to work well with such a limited number set. They trained many different models with different ways of using the limited number set and found which ways work and which ones didn't work.

The result is this patent.

Btw, one of the reasons why the academic community looks down upon Tesla is that they don't publish academic papers like Google/Waymo does. Apparently for Tesla, you have to scour patents to see their secret sauce.
