U.S. Navy carrier update amid reports that the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (ABECSG) has been redirected to the Middle East from Asia.

“The Navy can be anywhere in two weeks,” CNO Caudle told reporters at SNA. However, as @haltman noted, “a carrier is not a prerequisite for dealing with contingencies or even offensive operations.” Repositioning a CSG from INDOPACOM to CENTCOM will take 1-3 weeks, and the U.S. military has considerable assets already in the region (and CONUS) capable of striking Iran.

In the past 48 hours, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) departed San Diego and Norfolk, respectively. Both have been working up and could be underway for routine training or quietly leaving on deployment. Neither carrier has completed COMPTUEX, but, as we’ve seen recently, carriers will skip training and surge.

The Gerald R. Ford CSG remains on station in SOUTHCOM, and the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group appears to be reconstituting in the Caribbean after a port call in Mayport for its flagship. The George Washington CSG is at homeport in Yokosuka, Japan.

The NOTAM issued for Iranian Airspace has now expired, with air traffic throughout and over the country now able to resume.
